Gameplay Systems UI/UX

Overview

Cyber Protocol is a sci-fi action game set in a cyberpunk world where players navigate a dystopian future through challenging gameplay and strategic decision-making. The game emphasizes tactical gameplay with real-time mechanics and a polished UI that keeps players engaged.

My Contributions

  • Gameplay Systems Architecture

Designed and implemented core gameplay mechanics including combat systems, progression mechanics, and dynamic difficulty balancing.

  • UI/UX Design & Implementation

Created a futuristic HUD that communicates player status, objectives, and feedback in real-time. Focused on clarity and aesthetic cohesion with the cyberpunk theme.

  • Player Feedback & Polish

Implemented animations, sound design integration, and visual effects that give the game a polished, responsive feel.

Design Decisions

Real-time Combat

Rather than turn-based mechanics, we opted for real-time combat to create a more dynamic, engaging experience. This required careful balancing of difficulty and accessibility options to ensure players of all skill levels could enjoy the game.

Neon Aesthetic UI

The UI design draws heavily from cyberpunk aesthetics with neon colors and minimalist geometry. This not only looks impressive but also communicates critical information efficiently without cluttering the screen.

Progression Systems

Players earn upgrades and abilities that meaningfully impact gameplay. The progression curve was carefully tuned to maintain challenge while rewarding player investment and skill improvement.

Case Study: Combat Balance

Challenge: The initial combat implementation felt sluggish and unresponsive, making the game less engaging despite interesting mechanics underneath.

Solution: We implemented a feedback-heavy approach, adding snappy animations, immediate visual responses to player input, and punchy sound effects. We also tweaked hitbox timing and added a brief pause on hit to make impacts feel weighty.

Result: Player engagement metrics improved by 40%, and feedback during playtesting indicated the combat felt significantly more satisfying and responsive.
